Helen Georgia

Every year Helen, Georgia comes alive with the fun and excitement that is Oktoberfest. This festival has been around in this area since the 1970’s, when the quiet and peaceful little town becomes loud and alive with many visitors enjoying the festivities. People spill out onto the banks of the glorious Chattahoochee River, with musicians playing an array of different musical instruments and singing the most popular traditional songs of the area, while copious amounts of beer is consumed and dancing also gets underway. Some of the dancers that are to be seen are very talented polka dancers, that are dressed up in bright and colorful traditional outfits, while there are a host of chefs and cooks preparing and serving the most mouth watering cuisines and delicacies.

The town of Helen Georgia was never all that popular for many years, but after it had a transformation that made it a replica of a Bavarian Alps town, people and tourists started streaming in, if only to catch a glimpse of these wonderful surroundings and exquisite architecture. At the same time as the transformation took place, Oktoberfest was introduced as a copy of the same festival taking place in Munich, which is also a Bavarian town (although an authentic one, and not a copy). The way that this initial festival started in Munich, was in 1810, when a royal wedding took place and the after-party and general celebrations lasted for an entire two weeks, with the whole town taking part and enjoying themselves on the town’s streets. This eventually led to the same type of party happening at the same time each and every year, when the inhabitants of the place would drink beer, dance and sing and basically just have a great time! The type of beer that was created during this era was a thick, flavorsome brew with a high content of alcohol, and it was specifically made within the autumn months.

Helen Georgia adopted this festival, although it was not extremely popular in the beginning, but gradually people from across the States heard about it, and would make the effort to get down to this area to experience this unique type of celebration. Although the initial festival only lasts two weeks in Munich, the festival in Helen grew so much in popularity, with so many tourist visitors that they had to extend the celebrations for a six week period! All the hotels are always booked up way in advance and so slowly the little town was forced to expand, although if you are considering coming to Helen to visit during the time of the Oktoberfest, it is still a good idea to book quite far in advance, or maybe even rent a quaint and charming cottage or cabin on the borders of the town, so that if you wish for a little peace and quiet, it won’t be a problem whatsoever. You’ll enjoy yourself so thoroughly that you will make it a habit to come back every year for the fabulous Oktoberfest!
