Helen GA One of the most famous landmarks of Helen GA is the tranquil Chattahoochee River, which rises within the midst of the powerful Blue Ridge Mountain range and carries on right up to the state line of Alabama, and eventually joins the Apalachicola River within the South of Florida. The history of this magnificent river can be traced back for generations at a time, with human evidence being found along its’ banks that have their roots in ancient and bygone times. One of the main areas where these ancient civilizations lived, long ago, is within the area of Blakely today, where settlers inhabited this area in the time period known as the Mississippian Period, from around 800 to 1600 AD, and according to significant research, up to sixteen separate settlements were in existence during this time. With time, European settlers moved into this area, and brought a wide variety of diseases with them, which the native settlers were not immune to, and so a great portion of this population succumbed to the fate of these illnesses, thus dramatically reducing in nature. The survivors of these diseases moved from present day Helen GA to Atlanta, and the European settlers, bringing culture, politics and various languages along with them, occupied the area around the Chattahoochee River. The native survivors that now occupied the upper areas of the river were known collectively as the Creeks, and they used the river as a complete food and drink source, catching fish and other prey that came nearby to drink. The Creeks also created means of transportation by way of using the river and were the ones who actually gave the river its’ name. Around the time of 1814, the white settlers started occupying the Creeks land, and slowly driving them out of the area altogether, and they gradually established proper towns with a great deal of effort placed on the exportation of cotton via the river itself. Before long, steamboats were navigating the river through the Gulf of Mexico and onwards, transporting a wide variety of different products to trade in the many ports that were soon built in the region. Helen GA was soon a bustling place with many different stores and businesses thriving in the town center. River trade became the main variable in the area, although the waterfalls within the Chattahoochee River posed a problem for river navigation to all areas. Before long, ferries were incorporated into the daily life of the area, making transportation to and from work or to visit friends or family members nearby easy, and the difficulty it was in times past. Soon sawmills and other types of industrial power sources started appearing along the riverbanks, although during the civil war of 1861, most of these were taken possession of by various union forces of the Navy. A military district was also created within the area, with its’ very own commander whose job it was to ensure that the river was never occupied by any enemy forces. After the war in around 1865, the various sawmills and factories were destroyed and new ones later created.
