Before long they were driven out by the settlers, who came to the area in search of gold. These findings created what is known as “The Great Georgia Gold Rush Belt”, which stretched all the way from Dahlonega to Nacoochee-Helen Valley, and led to thousands of people storming the area in the hopes of getting rich. Once most of the gold was extracted from these mountains, the miners left the area and people interested in selling timber moved in.

A railroad was built and the surveyor of the construction decided to name the town “Helen” after his daughter. After some time, once all the timber was taken, the timber companies moved on and the town was left bare and desolate. But a German artist who moved to the town sketched buildings and cobbled streets as an idea for improvement, and that’s why Helen has the looks of an Alpine village today, with all the gingerbread cabin rentals – Helen, GA is a special place!
